Mercedes-Benz dramatically increased their all-electric car sales in Q4, and this trend is expected to continue into 2022. There has been a tremendous surge of interest in these cars, and it's anticipated that these figures will only improve.
Mercedes-Benz Passenger Cars posted sales of 540,800 vehicles worldwide during the fourth quarter of 2022, an increase of 17 percent from the same period in the prior year. For the full year 2022, the company reported sales of 2,043,900 cars, a decrease of 1 percent from 2021.
This was driven by demand for electric vehicles (EQ) and higher-end models. The total number came to 88,493 vehicles over Q4, with 73,019 passenger cars sold and 15,474 vans. For calendar year 2022 as a whole, Mercedes saw an increase on 4% from 2021 on passenger vehicle sales to 286,764 units and 20% on van sales to 64,185 units. The total for 2022 reached 350,949 units - 6.5% more than the preceding year.
In 2022, a total of 319,200 plug-in electric cars (Mercedes-Benz and Smart brands) were purchased - 19 percent more than the previous year. This figure accounted for 15 percent of Mercedes-Benz's total car sales.
Mercedes-Benz Vans announced 411,000 van sales in 2022, a 4% increase from the previous year.
“Strong year-end results and exponential volume growth of our EV portfolio are a testament to the strong demand for Mercedes-Benz EQ, luxury and commercial vehicles in the U.S. market,” said Dimitris Psillakis, President and CEO of MBUSA. “With a full lineup of five EQ models and a renewed focus on Top-End Vehicles, we will continue to advance our strategy and offer the most desirable luxury cars, SUVs, and commercial vehicles.”
Mercedes-Benz USA Top-End vehicle sales represented a sizable 29% of total deliveries in the quarter. The S-Class, Maybach and EQS Sedan all saw notable growth from the period before (+12%, +8% and +1,507%, respectively).
Meanwhile, their electric range is gaining momentum for 2023 with the introduction of the EQS Sedan, EQS SUV, EQE, EQB and soon to be released EQE SUV. In addition, 9,974 Mercedes-AMG high-performance models were sold in Q4 2022.
