Rivian Introduces Lower-Priced Dual-Motor Configurations

Not long after the arrival of pre-built dual-motor R1Ts in its online store, Rivian has now added both the “Dual-Motor” and “Performance Dual-Motor” options to its vehicle configurator. This allows shoppers to complete their custom R1T creation with these special packages.

Until now, Rivians have come equipped with four motors - one powering each wheel - for optimal traction, however, this comes at a price. Besides the complexity of having four motors instead of one, production is outsourced which only adds to the financial burden. Cost is undoubtedly Rivian's primary concern as they increase production.

Rivian has been working to resolve this matter through the production of its own "Enduro" drive units. In May, these dual-motor trucks with the Enduro drives were released and now production is high enough to provide them to customers.

Yesterday, Rivian added trucks to the "vehicle shop" section of their website. This area is invite-only and allows preorder holders to get a vehicle right away instead of having to wait for delivery of their custom build. This inventory has now been included in the public configurator. As a result, potential customers can view their options and order holders have the opportunity to select cheaper dual-motor models. The base model R1T dual-motor starts at $73,000, while the R1S begins at $78,000 with the smallest standard battery pack - this saves customers up to $8,000 compared to the base quad-motor price. Furthermore, both prices are below the $80,000 cap needed to qualify for the inflation reduction act's EV tax credit. Qualifying buyers can therefore receive an additional $3,750 back from the government on either model.

The 'Performance' dual-motor setup, newly revealed to the public last week, adds 132 hp and cuts your 0-60 time by one second. Yet it also boosts the base price of these models up to $84,000. You can't add the performance system to a 'standard' battery pack either. If you want to explore other possibilities for your build, Rivian's R1T or R1S configurator should help you decide on what options are best suited for you.
